Team NP: Who’s who?

Last week, former Team Secret carry player Jacky ‘EternaLEnVy’ Mao made the hotly anticipated announcement regarding the formation of his new Dota 2 team, Team NP. And before you ask, no, we don’t know what NP stands for, much like team Orangutan Ganja OG.

The roster is comprised of EternaLEnVy, Kurtis ‘Aui_2000’ Ling, Arif ‘MSS’ Anwar, Avery ‘SVG’ Silverman and Theeban ‘1437’ Siva. This makes them an ‘NA team’ as the roster has 3 Canadians (Aui, EE and 1437) and 2 Americans. Most people will be familiar with Aui_2000 and EternaLEnVy, having both played for Cloud9 and Team Secret at some point in their careers, with Aui playing for Evil Geniuses during TI6 in a run that saw them go from Open Qualifiers to finish in third place. However, some people, especially newcomers to the scene, may not know of the rest of the team. So, who’s who on Team NP?

Arif ‘MSS’ Anwar

MSS is an American who has been playing Dota since he was a child, but grew up with strict Bangladeshi parents which meant he and his brother had to play games secretly. When he got older, he began to play semi-professionally, standing in for North American teams such as EG and Team Liquid. Over his career, he’s played as a permanent member of Evil Geniuses in the tail of 2013, Team Dog (who were later acquired by mousesports), NA Rejects, and Dark Horse, before becoming a starting member in Cloud9 during some of 2015 alongside now-teammates SVG and 1437. Soon after, the whole C9 squad, excluding 1437, moved to Shazam, where he played for around 9 months until leaving during the post-TI6 shuffle. Around a month later, he was announced as a member of Team NP. He is an offlane player who has risen to prominence in the North American scene and is widely regarded as one of the best offlaners in the scene, being especially prominent on heroes such as Dark Seer and Tusk. I wonder if he likes Iron Talon.

Avery ‘SVG’ Silverman

Silverman has been playing Dota for some years, but only broke into the pro scene late last year as a very promising young player. He quickly rose to fame, becoming one of the top 5 players in North America under Dark Horse alongside MSS and 1437 until the roster was picked up by C9. He typically plays as a support, being particularly strong on Winter Wyvern and Earthshaker. However, Cloud9 did not experience great success, and as such, the team left for Shazam, where they placed as finalists in every event they attended, only missing out on the title at 2 events, which they lost to Team Freedom and Digital Chaos. Although the team enjoyed relative success, SVG left the team in May of 2016 to pursue a coaching role. He landed a role with Evil Geniuses, helping them to their third place TI6 finish. Now he is back as a player under the Team NP banner and will play as their Position 4. Keep your eyes on this guy.

Theeban ‘1437’ Siva

Finally, we come to 1437, a veteran of the Dota scene. He’s been playing since the original Dota, a mod for Warcraft 3. The first team he played for, ‘It’s Gosu eSports’, was a little known team who had some small players by the names of Bula and UNiVeRsE, who you will now recognise as word-class players who have been under the banners of Team Secret and Evil Geniuses. But let’s get back to Theeban. Since Gosu, he’s played for a multitude of North American organisations, including NA Rejects, Dignitas, Secret (as a coach), Cloud9 and Digital Chaos. After his second stint as coach of Team Secret, he returns to playing with this new Team NP line-up as their Position 5 in which he’ll be playing heroes such as Dazzle, Lion and the current-patch favourite Shadow Demon. Fun fact: 1437 stand for the number of letters in each word of ‘I love you forever’. What a nice fella.

Now that you’re all caught up with Team NP, I hope you’ll be as hyped to see them play as we here are. The team has interesting dynamics, with high-level North American talent left behind in the aftermath of the Fall Shuffle. On top of this, we see EE transitioning from his traditional Position 1 hard carry role into the team’s midlaner, a slot filled by former teammate Artour ‘Arteezy’ Babaev in his time on Team Secret, and Aui_2000 as the team’s Position 1, a role he briefly held in Evil Geniuses in early 2016 before being put back on his more typical role of Position 4 Support.

This team is certainly one to watch, and if all goes well, they could challenge Evil Geniuses and Digital Chaos for the NA throne.
