OverWatch: The Return of Summer Games

Overwatch’s Summer Games are back once more. The 2017 event will run for three weeks starting on Aug. 8 for all platforms. (PlayStation 4, PC and Xbox One) 90 Summer Games 2016 goodies are going to be available again to purchase this year. If you don’t remember or if you weren’t around last year this includes skins, voicelines, and the other summer games exclusive items that were not available to be unlocked via the credit system. For this Summer Games 2017, you’ll be able to unlock the old skins for credit at a discounted price as well as in the new skins that are coming too. Junkrat is going to get an awesome legendary skin; Mercy, Widowmaker, and McCree will all be getting skins as well for this event.

Last Year (2016) Summer Games cosmetics costs:

  • Rare tier will cost 75 credits
  • Epic Skins will cost 250 credits
  • Legendary Skins will cost 1,000 credits

New 2017 Summer Games Cosmetic Items costs:

  • Common tier will cost 75 credits
  • Rare tier will cost 225 credits
  • Epic Skins will cost 750 credits
  • Legendary Skins will cost 3,000 credits

Lucio Ball will be coming back also with a competitive portion called Copa Lucio Ball. Sydney Australia will be the new stadium for Lucio Ball. There will be top 500, sprays for placing and being in top 500, and massive tilt coming this Summer Games. There are going to be some gameplay changes for the mode: players can no longer stand in the enemy goal and boop the enemy goalie out of the way.  They removed the ability of boop your enemies due to people finding that frustrating. Lucio’s ultimate in Lucio Ball was previously used to pull the ball towards you very dramatically and there was some cheesy strategies about booping the goalie standing in the goal and pulling the ball. Lucio’s ultimate will now allow you to move much faster, you can use his alternate ability to boop the ball more quickly, and he jumps a lot higher.

This will be the first event that the lootboxes has the severely reduced dupe rate so potentially players have an increased chance of getting more new items and having a better experience with this event because not everyone has 8+ hours to farm boxes in game or spend money on cosmetics that doesn’t affect anything. There’s been some heated debates about if Blizzard will be bringing back all the seasonal events and follow this system they are using for Summer Games. Let me know how you feel about getting a second chance to obtain old cosmetics and your thoughts on what makes exclusives worth it.
