With so many question marks surrounding some of the other elite teams in the CSGO landscape, FaZe Clan look to be one of the heavy favorites coming into the ELEAGUE Boston Major. Many teams are using stand-ins or may be missing players due to illness. This leaves FaZe Clan as one of the more stable lineups attending the major.
FaZe is highly touted due to being arguably the most talented lineup in CSGO. They currently have two members of their roster on HLTV’s top 20 players of 2017, with two more probably making the top ten. All these incredible fraggers being led by Finn “karrigan” Andersen, one of the best in-game leaders in the world, has led to great results from FaZe Clan. However, some might argue FaZe has a lot of room to improve.
With so much firepower and high-level aim, FaZe is known for their fantastic CT sides. However, they rely heavily on their skill and aim to be successful for their T Sides. They rely too much on Nikola “NiKo” Kovač or Håvard “rain” Nygaard just running into a site and getting headshots. Their executes on the T side leave a lot to be desired and they are too reliant on their skill. Perhaps this is why SK Gaming seem to have their number. SK have the skill to compete with FaZe but also have much better team play and tactics to get them victories.
For players like NiKo and karrigan, there is a lot to prove. karrigan led the Danish core of Astralis deep into multiple majors, but it wasn’t until he was removed from the lineup that Astralis was able to win a major title. For NiKo, the previous major was his first real shot at winning a title after finally escaping the prison of Mousesports. At the PGL Krakow Major, the entirety of FaZe was underwhelming as they went out in last place. This was a massive disappointment for NiKo, a player who will go down as one of the greatest CSGO players of all time. It was also a huge let down for karrigan who played terribly at that event.
FaZe are coming into this event off the back of a title at ECS Season 4 Finals. However, even at that event they were taken to multiple overtimes in five games by a Mouz team that really had no business being so competitive. Despite cutting it close FaZe were able to overcome Mouz and win the tournament, but the final series did not bode well for them going into the major. karrigan has had about a month to get his troops in order to fix FaZe’s issues coming into the Boston major. With NiKo and rain in form, even a slight improvement to their T sides may allow FaZe to run away with their first major title.
